The most common reason is years of over-plucking, which eventually stops the hair returning. We also treat naturally sparse or thin brows, gaps and asymmetry, loss from a scar or burn, and brows affected by alopecia or thyroid-related shedding once the underlying condition is stable.

If your brow loss is recent or patchy rather than long-standing, we will usually want to understand why before recommending surgery. Thyroid problems, iron deficiency and alopecia areata can all thin the brows, and some of those improve once treated.

Under local anaesthetic, single-hair follicular units are taken from the donor area at the back of the scalp and placed individually into the brow. Most brows need somewhere around 150 to 400 grafts per side depending on how much is missing and the shape you want.

The technical work is in the angle. Scalp hair naturally grows outward at 40 to 45 degrees; brow hair lies almost flat against the skin and fans in different directions along the brow. Each graft has to be placed to match, or the result reads as fine but wrong.

When it is designed well, yes, and it is very difficult to detect. What gives a poor result away is not the hair itself but the design: a shape that does not suit the face, a hard outline, or hairs placed at a scalp-like angle that stand up rather than lie flat.

Yes, and this is the one practical difference to plan for. The hairs come from your scalp and keep their original growth cycle, so they grow longer than brow hair and need trimming, usually every couple of weeks. Most people fold that into their routine quickly and consider it a fair trade for not drawing brows on daily.

Over time the hairs often soften and adapt somewhat to their new location, but the trimming does not stop entirely.

Microblading is a tattoo: pigment deposited in the skin to imitate hairs. It is quicker, cheaper up front, and needs no healing of grafts, but it fades over roughly 12 to 18 months, requires regular top-ups, and can shift in colour. It also does not add any actual hair.

A transplant is surgery with a longer wait for the result, but it is real hair, permanent, and it grows. Cost-wise, repeated microblading over several years often overtakes a single transplant. Which suits you depends on whether you want a permanent solution or a reversible one.

Small crusts form around each graft and clear within about a week to ten days. There may be mild swelling and redness for a few days. Most people are comfortable in public within a week and back to normal routines quickly.

The transplanted hairs shed in the first few weeks, which is expected. New growth begins from around three to four months, and the final shape settles by roughly nine to twelve months.
